Master the descents on your MTB | Step-by-step downhill technique
BICICITA admin
At Bicicita, we know that suffering on the climbs has its rewards, but when the trail points downhill and rocks appear, technique is everything. Whether you're looking to improve your times or simply want to descend more confidently to enjoy riding with your intermediate group, there's one key fundamental you must master: The Attack Position. (Note: The following technical explanation is based on general cycling knowledge.)
What is the attack position and why is it crucial? Many cyclists make the mistake of sitting too low or too stiff on technical descents. The "attack position" makes you an active suspension on the bike, allowing it to move beneath you without destabilizing your center of gravity.
How to achieve the perfect position step by step:
-Pedals parallel to the ground (horizontal cranks): This prevents the pedals from hitting rocks or roots. Your weight should be mainly on your feet, not your hands.
-Elbows bent and outwards: Imagine your arms are additional shock absorbers. Keeping your elbows pointing outwards gives you greater control over the direction and stability of the handlebars in the event of sudden impacts.
-Hips back and flexed: On steep slopes, shift your hips slightly behind the saddle to compensate for the incline and avoid being thrown over the handlebars (the dreaded OTB - Over The Bar).
-Always look ahead: Your body follows your eyes. Don't look at the rock you want to avoid; look at the line you want to cross.
Anticipate the trail. Ready to put it into practice? Reading the theory is easy, but the best way to master the technique is by riding. You don't have to practice this alone. Open the Bicicita app and filter rides by discipline (MTB/Enduro) and skill level.
