Discovering the Lost Paradise in the Pyrenees: Zone Zero

It's not every day you stumble upon a hidden gem, especially on a last-minute vacation. What began as a typical four-day family trip to the Pyrenees turned into an unexpected discovery: 1,500 kilometers of paths and trails rescued from oblivion, intertwining old maps from the 1950s with current ones, thanks to a group of passionate locals committed to preserving the memory and cultural richness of the villages.
This paradise, known as Zone Zero, is not only a gift for mountain lovers, but also an example of how dedication and love for the land can revive communities that had fallen into oblivion. At certain times of the year, these nearly deserted villages see their population triple, thanks to the influx of cyclists and hikers drawn by the region's beauty and history. It's not uncommon that, after a first visit, one is left with only one question on their mind: "When are we coming back?" And even more so, "Why didn't I come sooner?"
Personally, I've always loved the mountains; after two days at the beach, I'm already longing to go home. However, the Pyrenees, with their majestic nature and deep-rooted history, are a place that envelops you and invites you to stay. Zona Zero is, without a doubt, a perfect example of this.
The mastermind behind this phenomenon is Ángel Chemiz, accompanied by a group of friends and volunteer collaborators who share a clear vision: to preserve and share these historic trails. Each route in Zona Zero has been carefully designed by people who understand the mountains and the sport. It starts gently, allowing the terrain to gradually reveal its secrets, with options for all levels and types of bicycles, including routes to enjoy as a family with children.
Ángel is the kind of person who, when he talks about his work, infects you with his enthusiasm. His passion for what he does is palpable, and in a time when authenticity is a rare commodity, he represents a valuable asset. For him, the most important thing is to maintain the legacy of these trails and pass on his love for them to new generations, regardless of whether the routes are more or less challenging, although they are too.
