When you start cycling, it's normal to have questions about clothing, equipment, or your riding position. These tips can help you ride more comfortably and safely from your very first rides.

1. Wear the briefs without underwear

The chamois in cycling shorts is designed to be in direct contact with the skin. Wearing underwear underneath can add seams, trap moisture, and cause chafing. It's important to choose the correct size and wash your cycling shorts after every ride.

2. Put your helmet on correctly.

It's not enough to just wear it: the helmet must sit level on your head, without tilting too far back, and stay firmly in place without being uncomfortable. Adjust the straps so they form a "V" around your ears and leave about one or two fingers' width of space under your chin.

3. Learn to use cleats without rushing

Cleats aren't essential for enjoying cycling. If you decide to use them, start practicing on a flat, quiet, traffic-free surface. Practice unclipping each foot several times and get used to unclipping one before coming to a complete stop. Initial falls while stationary are common, but gradual practice will help you avoid them.

4. Don't ignore persistent discomfort

During your first few rides, you might notice some initial discomfort, especially around the saddle. However, intense, localized, or recurring pain on every ride could indicate that the bike isn't properly adjusted. Check the saddle height and position, the reach to the handlebars, and your riding posture. If the discomfort persists, a professional bike fitting may be advisable.

5. Bring basic equipment for the route

Even for a short ride, it's a good idea to bring: Water. A fully charged phone. Identification. A spare inner tube or tire plugs, depending on the type of wheel. Tire levers. A pump or air cartridge. A multi-tool. Some food if the ride will be long.

Before leaving, also check the tire pressure, the operation of the brakes and that the wheels are properly secured.

Start at your own pace

You don't need the most expensive bike or all the gear from day one. Start with routes suited to your level, learn gradually, and always prioritize safety. We've all been beginners. Ask questions, practice, and enjoy every kilometer.
